With two days to the trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox have been hitting the phones heavily. They have a record of 57-51, and are firmly in the Wild Card race .
Boston has stated in the past that they want to get a long-term shortstop, and to get another starting pitcher to fully cement having the best rotation in the MLB. According to The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey, Boston tried to do both with one partner , as they proposed a deal to the Cincinnati Reds for All-Stars Elly De La Cruz and Hunter Greene.

De La Cruz is one of the best shortstops in the MLB, and one of its best players. This season, he’s slashing .279/.358/.508/.866 with 18 doubles, 18 home runs, 48 RBI, and 20 stolen bases in 90 games played.
Overall, De La Cruz has a great swing and an amazing glove as well . On top of that, he still has three years of control left on his contract . However, when it runs out, it would be tough for Boston to re-sign him, as Scott Boras is his agent.

Greene is another All-Star the Red Sox have been linked to in the past, and for good reason. In 2024 and 2025, Greene had a combined 16-9 record, a 2.75 ERA, 301 Ks, and a WHIP of around 1.000 .
This season has been much different from that, as he has just recently returned after missing the first three months of the season with a bone chips removal surgery . He has a 2-2 record, a 6.83 ERA, 33 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.373 .
If he can return to form, it makes a lot of sense for Boston to get him. He’s right-handed, which the Sox need, as they only have one righty in their rotation in Sonny Gray, who may be gone by next season. Greene comes with enormous upside, along with three and a half years left on a team-friendly contract .
How realistic is this?

Apparently, not realistic at all. Boston was shut down by Cincy when they refused to offer any young major leaguers , as they offered pretty much their entire farm instead.
However, Boston CBO Craig Breslow and the front office still have around 36 hours to change their minds, and create the ultimate blockbuster to land De La Cruz and Greene.
