McLaren, Red Bull appeal against Monaco GP result being heard today

McLaren and Red Bull’s appeal against the decision to reinstate Alpine’s Pierre Gasly to third place at June’s Monaco Grand Prix is being heard in Paris on Tuesday.The hearing in front of the FIA's International Court of Appeal starts at 8am UK time.Gasly was one of five drivers who received five-second time penalties for speeding in the pit lane during the Principality street race on June 7. The Frenchman received two such sanctions but was unable to serve them during the race as he did not make any subsequent pit stops, meaning the 10s was added to his final race time. He crossed the line in third place but was relegated to seventh, with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar promoted from fourth to the final podium place instead.But a successful right of review from Alpine saw Gasly’s two penalties annulled five days later after the discovery of an “incorrect distance calculation in the pit lane”, meaning the original race result was restored. Gasly was therefore back into third, Hadjar fourth, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri fifth and the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad sixth and seventh respectively.However, stewards said nothing could be done under F1's rules to potentially address the pit-lane speeding penalties served by drivers during the race, which had included Mercedes' George Russell (which had been converted into a drive-through after not being served at his next pit stop and saw him finish 12th) Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and McLaren's Piastri. Alpine had also been the only team to request a right of review within the required timeframe.McLaren and Red Bull subsequently appealed the Gasly reinstatement, with a hearing date set for Tuesday at the FIA’s headquarters in Paris.Speaking after last Sunday’s Dutch GP, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella explained what his team wanted to achieve through the appeal.“We go to the hearing at the International Court of Appeal with a double intent,” said Stella.“The first intent is more general than the interest of McLaren. We think that the process that happened after the race in Monaco is a process that needs to be review because from a fairness of all competitors, the fact the penalty was removed, introduces some significant evidence of concern and we would like to take the opportunity of the International Court of Appeal for a clarification of this aspect. “There is obviously more related to this case. You can go into the technical aspects of how the pit limit speed was calculated, but for me, the fairness and the principle needs to be clarified and possibly reinstated because the reference sets some significant concerns.“The second aspect is the interest of McLaren ourselves. We not only have this level of concern but we got also materially penalised for having served a penalty that is not appealable.“This even cost us points in the championship so there is a general interest for Formula 1 and the sport and there’s a material interest for McLaren and the championship impact.”
