Last-second heroics lift Muncie Central football to victory over Delta

MUNCIE — The city of Muncie needed a high school football game more than it ever has.

On Friday, Aug. 21, the Muncie Central Bearcats and Delta Eagles answered the call by treating their fans to an instant classic — a 23-22 victory by the Bearcats that came down to the final second, literally.

With both communities still reeling from the calamitous flooding that swept through the area in recent weeks , the two teams fought their tails off to put a brilliant rivalry game together and give everyone who saw it a sense of unity in times of hardship.

"Everybody's going through stuff right now, but we had however long this game was to just be entrenched in it and go play this football game," Muncie Central coach Kyle Buresh said. "At the end of the day, that was a fun one that we all put on a show for our community tonight. Both teams did, really proud of the way both teams handled themselves, competed extremely hard but competed with first class."

Central clinched its victory in the very last second of the game. The Bearcats trailed 22-16 with 23 seconds left in the game and used their final timeout before a third-and-goal play. Junior quarterback Mason Ferguson was sacked on third down, forcing him and his teammates to hurry to the line of scrimmage and try to get one last snap off.

Ferguson got the play off in time, rolled out to his right and looked for junior wide receiver Carlos Echols Jr. in the end zone. Echols beat his man, jumped into the air and came down with the touchdown catch to tie the game at 22.

"On the last timeout, coach just said, 'Go make a play,'" Ferguson said. "He put me at quarterback, he trusted me and told me to go make a play to win the game, so that's what I did. I put the team on my back, and (Echols) helped me out. He's been great, we've been working all summer, and it paid off."

It was a tough game for Echols Jr., who dropped two surefire touchdowns in the first half. After initially anguishing over those missed opportunities, he was able to put the drops behind him and make the catch the Bearcats needed most.

"I was just happy that they trusted me even after the mistakes I made, and I'm glad I got to do that for my team," Echols Jr. said. "Honestly, I was beating myself up. It was my team that got my head right. I just had to flush it and go 1-0 the next play."

Central still needed to kick an extra point to determine if they would win or send it to overtime. Junior kicker Toby Gruver — fresh off a hat trick in the Bearcats' boys soccer season opener — booted a no-doubter over the crossbar to clinch the victory.

"My whole life is consistent, so I got to be consistent on this kick to win the game," Gruver said. "I got that clutch gene. If you need someone to win the game, that's me."

Bigger than football

Before the game, a moment of silence was held to honor the life of former Delta player Matthew Morey — one of seven victims of the floods statewide — as well as others affected by the floodwaters. Both teams paid tribute to Morey, who scored a 58-yard touchdown in the matchup a year ago, by having their captains carry his Delta No. 2 jersey to midfield before the coin toss.

After honoring their fallen former teammate, the Eagles took the field and played the game with a sense of joy that has been harder to come by as they have mourned Morey's untimely passing.

"First of all, all the credit in the world to Muncie Central, what a class act their players and staff are," Delta coach Billy Lynch said. "We talk all the time about, 'You don't get these days back,' and it was a beautiful night, it was a great atmosphere, and it was good to see our guys with a smile on their face playing football."

Recapping a thriller

Both offenses were stagnant in the first half, and the first score of the game was produced by the Bearcat defense. Senior defensive lineman Isaiah Amerson batted a pass at the line of scrimmage, and it fell right into the arms of senior linebacker Rex Vargas, who returned it untouched for a 42-yard pick six.

Delta didn't take long to respond. On the next drive, the Eagles marched downfield and converted multiple third downs in the process before senior quarterback Deacon Blevins connected with fellow senior Carter Jackson in the front corner of the end zone.

However, the Bearcats would respond with a quick drive of their own before halftime, capped off by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Ferguson to senior receiver Doiron Montgomery, who made a spectacular one-handed juggling grab in the end zone. A failed 2-point conversion made it a 13-7 game in Central's favor at halftime.

After a sluggish start to the second half, Central went up two possessions via a 22-yard field goal by Gruver with just over a minute left in the third quarter. Delta entered the fourth down 16-7, but the Eagles fought and scratched their way back into the game.

Junior receiver Dylan Clawson sparked the comeback by taking a screen pass 25 yards through the Bearcat defense for a touchdown, and the Delta defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing Bearcat drive. The Eagles offense then pieced together another scoring drive which finished off by a one-yard rushing touchdown for junior running back Ryan Lynch, who also caught the ensuing 2-point conversion.
