Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders is shaping up to be one of the cornerstones of the franchise. The son of NFL legend Deion Sanders is entering his second year in the league with a new coach, Todd Monken, who was hired back in January.

With the NFL season closing in, Monken identified a trait that he adores in Sanders, which he shared during a recent interview with NFL on ESPN.

“one thing I love about Shedeur is he is not afraid to ask any question. He’ll ask questions that I would have never asked for fear that I would look stupid, or that someone would make fun of me. It might be as simple as, ‘Is that shirt blue?’ And everybody around, they’re like, ‘Well, yes it’s blue,’ you know. But in his mind, if he doesn’t know for sure, he’s going to ask,” Monken shared. “He’s beyond worrying about what anybody else thinks, and that is really cool ’cause he’s going to engage in the meetings to get it right. That’s what you want,” he continued.

Sanders is locked in a battle with returning quarterback Deshaun Watson for the QB1 spot. Watson is gearing up for a return after he missed the entirety of the 2025 season due to a torn Achilles.

Sanders, meanwhile, was selected by the Browns with the 144th pick of the 2025 draft. He rose up the depth chart over the course of the season and established himself as the starter midway through.

Todd Monken on what he has learned about the Cleveland Browns so far

Before Todd Monken took on the role of head coach for the Cleveland Browns earlier this year, he had prior experience with the franchise. In the 2019 season, he served as the Browns’ offensive coordinator. However, the franchise now has a new identity. During the aforementioned interview, Monken shared what he has learned about Cleveland.

“Well, it started back in spring. They love to practice. Our guys love to compete. I mean, you love it when you have a team that you have to pull back. ‘Guys, we can’t be that physical every day. We can’t be on the ground.’ I mean, that is so awesome to come out every day and you don’t have to tell them to speed up, you got to tell them to slow down,” Monken explained. (0:55)

Monken will be looking to bring the Browns back into postseason contention after the team missed it last season with an overall record of 5-12.
