Yet Spurs flatly refused to activate their £22m to £25m buy option. That decision speaks volumes.

Right, let’s talk sense here. Palhinha can clearly play at this level. Nobody is arguing that. But does he actually solve a burning problem at Villa Park, or does he just clutter up a position that doesn’t need fixing? Unai Emery already has Boubacar Kamara. When fit, Kamara does the exact same job as a primary ball-winner and defensive anchor. You aren’t buying potential here. He won’t resell for profit later down the line. Spending upwards of £22 million on a short-term fix who barely offers anything different to what Villa already possess feels like odd business.

Factor in his reluctance to leave Germany and the whole thing starts smelling off. Bringing in a player who has to be dragged to the Midlands against his will is always a massive gamble. They rarely hit the ground running. Emery runs a tight, disciplined setup where everyone pulls in the same direction, and dealing with a player brooding over a missed stay in Munich during pre-season is a headache Villa can do without.

If Villa want to make serious noise in the Champions League next term, the money needs to go elsewhere. A proper wide midfielder. A creative number eight who can unlock tight blocks. Palhinha brings muscle, sure, but he doesn’t elevate this squad. The player profile is fine in isolation. The timing, the age, and the price tag simply aren’t.
