Scottie Scheffler Gets Honest About Runner-Up Finish at 3M Open

Scottie Scheffler had a masterful final round at the 3M Open in Minnesota, with an 8-under 63 performance, but his 22-under par ultimately fell short when it came to claiming the first-place finish he was hoping for.

Instead, 21-year-old newcomer Jackson Koivun claimed the championship by three strokes this weekend in just his third career start, potentially launching a superstar career. He closed out the weekend at 5-under 66 and a 25-under 259 total to win the event.

After he finished on Sunday, Scheffler reacted to the idea of getting another second-place finish in a tournament, saying he didn't get everything he hoped for from his 3M Open final round, but gave it his all.

"I did what I could today. When you need to shoot a really, really low number like that, you either gotta hit a lot of shots really close or make a ton of putts or more than likely, a combination of both, and I was close today, but yea just ultimately gonna come up a little bit short," he told CBS Sports .

"My ball striking has been pretty good the last few weeks, and I feel like I've given myself some opportunities. Like last week was a week in which I didn't hold a lot of putts, and then this week on an easier golf course, you got a hole a ton of putts or hit a lot of wedges really close, and my wedges were maybe 10, 15 feet instead of, you know, inside five feet," he said.

"Put up a good fight. Played nice today, and yeah, go home, get some rest, and get ready for the playoffs," he said of his weekend's effort.

For Scheffler, his 3M Open finish was his fifth second-place finish of the season. He was also a runner-up at The Masters, the Cadillac Championship, the Travelers Championship, and the RBC Heritage.

With the second-place finish at the 3M Open, he'll still walk away with nearly $1 million from the purse to add to his career winnings. According to Golf Digest , Scheffler gets $959,200, while the winner Koivun receives $1.584 million.

While his runner-up finish isn't the type of performance Scheffler expects from himself, it's clear he's still among the world's best and always lurking on the leaderboard. It feels as if another win is looming, and it could be coming at just the right time.

Next up on his schedule will be the FedExCup Playoffs with August's FedEx St. Jude Championship, the BMW Championship, and the TOUR Championship to determine the season-long champion out of the final 30 contenders.
