Club América Femenil defeats Tigres Femenil in the Campeón de Cameponas

On a hot Texas night, Club América defeated Tigres on penalties to secure the 2025-2026 Campeón de Campeonas. In doing so, the Mexico City club has now obtained three trophies in one year: Clausura 2026, Concacaf 2026 and Campeón de Campeonas. This was the perfect start to the season as Liga Femenil BBVA, the new rebrand of the league, starts this Friday.

It didn’t take long for the action to get started as both teams looked for an opening goal early in the game. América won out in the 11th minute thanks to a goal by Irene Guerrero. While the Spaniard got on the end of the ball, the play was all thanks to Geyse who fought her way up the left flank. The Brazilian was marked by Mayra Delgadillo but that didn’t stop her from getting around the defender who passed the ball to an open Guerrero who redirected the ball into the back of the net.

The Amazonas then attempted to equalize the score immediately but were unable to even with their multiple opportunities. Either their strikers couldn’t get the balls on target or youngster Itzel Velasco was there to make the stops. The Aguilas were then close to doubling their lead on a free-kick. Former Nancy Antonio stepped up to take the free-kick and sent the ball directly to net but Itzel Gonzalez was there to punch it out. Antonio sent the ball in a perfect angle, right under the crossbar, where a goalkeeper would have a hard time keeping it out but Gonzalez had a fast reflex that saved her team. While that shot didn’t go in, América made sure the next one did as Monserrat Saldivar got the ball past Gonzalez. However, the goal was disallowed since the ball hit her right arm before going in and the Amazonas were able to take a breather right before the half.

The second half went just like the first half. The Aguilas were more dominant than Tigres though Tigres had many more chances to score. Unfortunately, none of those balls were able to go in. The Amazonas looked like a team who was still in preseason compared to the Aguilas who looked more in shape than them. As the game was reaching the 90th minute América’s bench was standing up and ready to celebrate but Diana Ordoñez was there to spoil the victory. Veteran Stephany Mayor made her way up the midfield where she sent a through ball to Ordoñez. The youngster made her way in-between the two defenders and sent the ball past Velasco to level the game with two minutes to spare.

There were a few minutes added to stoppage time but that was not enough and neither team was able to score to avoid taking the game to penalties. Instead a winner was going to be decided on penalties. Pedro Losa and Angel Villacampa had to send their five best penalty takers to the spot and hope their goalkeepers could step it up. Ordoñez stepped up first for Tigres but had her shot blocked by Velasco to set the tone. Guerrero was the first to step up for the Aguilas and slotted her chance home. Next, Maria Sanchez stepped up for Tigres and slotted her penalty home to level things. Then Scarlett Camberos, Gaby Garcia and Nancy Antonio were next in line for América and all three made their penalties. Brazilian duo Jheniffer and Mariza made their penalties and it all came down to Mayor. If she made the shot the Amazonas still had life but if she didn’t it was all over. Mayor attempted to fake Velasco but was unable to as the youngster stopped the shot and helped América win. It wasn’t that Tigres took any bad penalties, there was just no way they were going to be able to defeat Velasco who is known to be great at penalties. This was the perfect start for América who showed the rest of the league that they mean business going into the new season and that they aren’t just slowing down and are on the hunt for more trophies.
