Byron Young dealing with knee injury that's bothered him 'for years

Myles Garrett is obviously the headliner of the Los Angeles Rams ’ pass rush, but Byron Young is a crucial part of the defense, too . Entering a contract year, Young is looking to get even better in 2026 after making the Pro Bowl for the first time last season.

Unfortunately, he’s not fully healthy, and it sounds like he hasn’t been in quite some time.

After sitting out practice on Monday, the Rams’ second session of training camp, Young told reporters that he’s still nursing a knee injury that’s bothered him “for years.” Young says he’s “feeling real good,” but he spent his offseason managing his knee with the Rams’ training staff.

"It's been good,” Young said of his offseason. “I’ve just been nursing up my knee. That was a process. They’ve got a good plan for me in place.”

Young was asked about the recovery plan for his knee, and he says he and the Rams are going to take it “day by day.” He practiced on Sunday and then sat out Monday’s practice, but he plans to be back on the field “in a couple of days.”

"Just day by day,” he said. “I practiced yesterday. I don't want to do too much and overload our workload. We’ve got a plan to just take some time and get back out there in a couple of days. Day by day, we're trying to last for 17 games and the postseason."

Young has been listed as questionable on the injury report multiple times over the last three years due to a knee injury. He injured it in the playoffs and was questionable against the Bears in the divisional round, confirming this is the same injury as that one.

Remarkably, he hasn’t missed a single game in the NFL yet, but it still seems to be bothering him entering Year 4, which is at least somewhat concerning.

"Yes, it's the same knee,” he said. “It was challenging but at the same time I trust the training staff with everything. It was something I’ve been dealing with for years now. They always came through for me and I trust them."

Young is already 28 years old after being drafted as a 25-year-old rookie in 2023. His age will certainly hurt his value as he seeks a new contract, whether it’s from the Rams or another team in free agency.

Add in a balky knee, and teams (including the Rams) could have reservations about giving Young a massive long-term extension given his age and injury situation. He’s been a productive player for the Rams, and it makes one wonder how much better he could be if he can figure out his knee and get back to 100%.
