Buccaneers Receive Good News on WR Emeka Egbuka After Toe Injury

Panic immediately set in when Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Emeka Egbuka got rolled up by a teammate during joint practice with the New York Jets on Wednesday and limped off the field with what was later diagnosed as a toe injury. The severity was unknown at the time, but when an NFL player is diagnosed with a "toe injury," many people's thoughts instantly jump to turf toe, which can take weeks, if not months, to heal.

Thankfully, the Bucs appear to have avoided the worst. On Friday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reported that after further testing with a specialist, Egbuka's injury appears to be nothing more than a sprain. Stroud added that Tampa Bay remains "optimistic" he'll be ready to go for Week 1.

Egbuka was selected 19th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft and immediately made his presence felt as a rookie. Across 17 games, he hauled in 63 catches on 127 targets for 938 yards and six touchdowns, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Even in a deep receiver room, Egbuka proved he can handle a heavier workload — and this season, he may need to.

While Egbuka is coming off one of the best rookie seasons in the league last year, there's even more pressure on him this season with Mike Evans no longer a member of the Buccaneers. The six-time Pro Bowler signed with the San Francisco 49ers this past offseason, leaving a massive void that Tampa Bay's prized first-round pick will be expected to fill.

Any extended absence would have been a significant blow for Tampa Bay, so it's encouraging to see that Egbuka should be fine. After Friday's matchup with the Jets, the Bucs have two more preseason games: Saturday, Aug. 22, against the Kansas City Chiefs, and Friday, Aug. 28, against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The regular season kicks off for Tampa Bay on Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium.

Tampa Bay already knows what Egbuka can do, so there's no need to rush him back. But it would still be ideal for him to get some reps in before the regular season begins. Hopefully, he's back on the field in the coming weeks.
