Darius Garland Opens Up On Clippers Trade, His Toe Injury, And Playing For Tyronn Lue

Ever since his trade to the Los Angeles Clippers last season, it’s been a fresh start for young point guard Darius Garland . After six and a half years with the Cavaliers, he’s in a whole new situation now , and the fans are eager to see how he will respond.

With weeks to go until opening night, Garland still has to wait before he can take the court again, but he seems determined to deliver his best season yet, and all the signs are pointing in a positive direction. In a recent chat with HoopsHype’s Cyro Asseo, Garland reflected on the trade and explained that the whole transition process has actually been a breeze.

“ The trade was actually pretty easy for me, bro, to be honest with you,” said Garland, via HoopsHype . “Which was crazy; we were already in L.A., we had a road trip to L.A. already, so the transition wasn’t too hard, to be honest with you. Mentally, it wasn’t a shock, but it was still like a shock. I’ve been here for seven, seven and a half years, and now just to up and pack my bags like that, it was just like, dang. But it’s part of the business. I understand the business side of it. So once I got to L.A., I was pretty happy. Got to be in a new city, like a real new revamp. So it was cool. Easy transition, though. Super excited to be there. I was pretty happy. I was coming to a new opportunity just to take on a new challenge. So I was excited about that. ”

Garland was a leading point guard on the Cavaliers before his move to Los Angeles, but the trade did not come as a huge surprise. Despite his talent, Garland found himself the odd man out in Cleveland, especially after their defeat in the 2025 Eastern Semifinals. It didn’t help that Garland was beset by injuries during the 2025-26 campaign , limiting him to just 19 out of 82 games. Fortunately, Garland has confirmed a full recovery.

“ It started off as like a bone bruise at first, like, just kept stubbing my toe in the front of my shoe. And then me thinking it’s just a toe, I could just play on it,” Garland added . “It just got worse. So I had like some torn ligaments and stuff like that. So I just had to get that reconstructed. But I’m all good now,” Garland said. “ It was very frustrating, just because the season I had before (2024/25), it was really, really good. So I think we could have had a chance of making a run if I didn’t get hurt. So that was pretty frustrating. But it’s pretty tough just out there playing with nine toes for like half a year. But it’s all good, though, because in the second half of the year, I had all 10 toes. And I felt really good. I felt like I was getting back to normal.”

The Clippers may not be in the title conversation this season, but they are expected to be competitive with Garland, Bennedict Mathurin , Rui Hachimura , and Bradley Beal . Of course, they also have head coach Tyronn Lue, who is widely regarded as one of the best in the league. He admitted that he’s excited to play for former Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue and revealed his desire to be more like Kyrie Irving .

“It’s super cool because I actually watched him in 2016. I told him I wanted to play a little bit like Kai and how he played in 2016 in that Finals run,” said Garland . “So, actually seeing his vision actually work, trying to implement it into my game, I think it would be pretty cool. It’s going to be pretty interesting how he tries to fit it in. But I’m super excited. We’ve been talking a lot about the offense this year. I’m super excited to get back over there in L.A. and just be with the team and be with the guys.”

In the end, the Clippers may no longer have Paul George or Kawhi Leonard , but the vibes are overall positive amid a full culture reset. If this group stays healthy, they could surprise some people next season and potentially plant the seeds for a greater ascension in the future.

Whatever happens from here, Garland will be a key factor. With career averages of 18.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game on 45.4% shooting from the field, we all know what his game brings to the table. If he continues to embrace his new surroundings and takes on a leadership role in the locker room, it may just be enough to elevate his game and finally become the star he always knew he could be.
