Matt O’Riley exit could hand Celtic transfer windfall
Matt O’Riley has indicated he would welcome the chance to explore a new opportunity after a difficult spell with Brighton.
The ex-Celtic midfielder struggled for regular football following his move to the south coast. A productive loan stint at Marseille brought two goals and five assists before Brighton brought him back in January, although he featured just four times for Fabian Hurzeler during the remainder of the campaign.
Any move away from the Amex Stadium could prove financially beneficial for Celtic, who secured a 10 per cent sell-on clause on any profit Brighton make from the £25million transfer agreed in August 2024.
Discussing his future, O’Riley said via The Argus: “I’m very open to trying all sorts, you know?
“I also like sunshine! Vitamin D is a good friend of mine, so whenever I can get closer to that. It’s also just a different culture, different experiences, learning a new language, all that stuff.
“I think just helps you build yourself as a person.”
O’Riley also reflected on the similarities between the support he experienced at Marseille and during his time at Celtic, admitting both clubs prepared him for the demands of elite football.
He said: “Definitely, yes.
“Even when I’ve been away, I was in Prague with some friends, and I met Marseille fans. You meet them all over the world, similar to Celtic.
“In that sense, they are both massive clubs because you always find a Marseille or a Celtic fan everywhere. I feel very lucky to have played for two teams that size because not many people do.
“And, also as a person, it has probably set me up for a lot of challenging moments.”
