Fresh off the plane and onto the practice fields, the Dallas Cowboys kicked off training camp in Oxnard, CA. At the start of the day, everyone was cleared to participate in team activities, so everyone was able to take part in the opening festivities.
Unfortunately, veteran safety PJ Locke left practice early with an apparent injury. The team has updated Locke’s status and believes he’s going to be fine. Those players on the field left the fans with a lot to talk about. The star players did well as many would’ve thought, but who did especially well in the first practice of a long summer? Here’s who impressed on Day 1 of camp.
Jaydon Blue
You can never have enough weapons offensively. If Jaydon Blue can find a way to earn meaningful snaps, it only further elevates a potent offense. On Day 1, Blue came out blazing, exhibiting his 4.38 speed.

Not only did Blue blow past the defense for what would’ve been a long touchdown, but he also got some work with the first-team offense. The speedy sophomore will have a lot to showcase for the fans in attendance throughout training camp. Here’s hoping Blue keeps it up in the weeks that follow and this translates to the preseason next month.
George Pickens
George Pickens looks like he’s ready to pick up where he left off last season, when he earned All-Pro honors. Although some are surprised Pickens was on the field while on the franchise tag, Pickens, being a professional, made good of his first practice in California.

His head coach spoke of his mentality entering what could be contractually a career-defining year:
“He was as dialed in in meetings as I’ve seen him since he’s been here, just following along, questions,” Schottenheimer said. “I think you’re going to see a very motivated George Pickens going into the season. And I think that’s great news for us and maybe bad news for the rest of the league.”
Among the other notables who had pretty good days were former Green Bay Packer Rashan Gary, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, as well as Brevyn Spann-Ford. Gary forced a fumble on a run by Phil Mafah that was recovered by rookie Caleb Downs. Prescott, now in his 11th season as the Cowboys’ quarterback, looked as comfortable as ever reading the defense and getting the ball to his playmakers. Lamb made a few catches on quick throws from Prescott and made some moves after the catch. Spann-Ford found the soft spot in the defense and made a great catch on a pass away from his body.
