MIAMI (AP) — Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks felt nerve irritation and numbness in his throwing arm and departed after facing one batter in Miami’s 4-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.
Fairbanks started the ninth but left after issuing a leadoff walk to Mickey Gasper. He stepped off the mound and touched his arm as he talked with catcher Brian Navarreto and manager Clayton McCullough.
Fairbanks experienced similar discomfort on April 27, when his outing at the Los Angeles Dodgers was cut short.
“Both of them weren’t good,” Fairbanks said. “This one I felt it more throughout the whole arm as opposed to just getting finger numbness.”
Fairbanks will undergo additional tests on Tuesday. The setback in Los Angeles sidelined him for three weeks.
“Warming up you feel fine,” Fairbanks said. “You feel fine throughout the day and all of a sudden it just kind of spirals on itself. It’s just something that compounds on itself.”
The 32-year-old Fairbanks signed a one-year deal with the Marlins after seven seasons with Tampa Bay. He has appeared in 44 games and has 18 saves. He ended up taking the loss Monday and has a 6.02 ERA.
