Nick Saban on Protect College Sports Act: ‘It’s certainly 100 times better than what we have now

As the 2026 season nears, the Protect College Sports Act is one of the bigger issues hanging over college football. The act was co-authored by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), only to be opposed by conferences like the Big Ten and SEC. There are supporters, though, and one of the bigger names is Nick Saban .

Monday was another example, as Saban explained that the PCSA is “certainly 100 times better than what we have now.” These comments are fresh off players who were in NFL training camps jumping back into college football. Saban says the bill passing would solve a lot of the problems at hand.

“I think a lot of the issues that we have right now could be resolved in this bill, if people would get on board with it,” Saban said . “But it’s not perfect. But the thing about it is, democracy is not perfect, but it’s better than everything else. Tell me something better. This bill is not perfect, but it’s better than everything else, and it’s certainly 100 times better than what we have now, and it probably solves 80% of the problems. We want to stay focused on 20% of the problems that it doesn’t solve. But if you just solve one transfer, control NIL to some degree in terms of a level playing field and five years of eligibility, you would answer your own question about the guy from the Cleveland Browns. Five years of eligibility.”

Nick Saban explains why he does not get into politics

Shortly before discussing the PCSA, Saban was asked if he would ever want to get into the political world. It’s something we have seen in the state of Alabama before, as Tommy Tuberville is the former Auburn head coach. Saban retired from coaching following the 2023 season before getting into the media world.

Turns out, his work in the media is why politics is not of interest. Saban said he enjoys being on ESPN College GameDay, talking football with Rece Davis, Pat McAfee, Desmond Howard, and Kirk Herbstreit. It’s not something he wants to give up.

“I like what I’m doing right now,” Saban said. “I mean, I speak, I’ve got businesses, I love being on ESPN. Got a great group of guys to be around every single Saturday. There’s no consequence — we never lose a game. So, why would I get involved in that?”
