Tottenham Hotspur retain an interest in Cody Gakpo as they continue work on wide attacking additions this summer, but the current expectation is that Liverpool would be reluctant sellers unless conditions around the market change significantly.

Credit for the latest update goes to Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go Podcast, where he explained, “In a separate story, because I expect Tottenham to sign two players, I would still keep an eye on Tottenham and Cody Gakpo because he’s a player they still like,” before adding, “Let’s see what’s going to happen there [and] if Liverpool will open doors or not. But for sure, there will be many movements about wingers for Tottenham.”

That framing is important. Tottenham’s admiration appears genuine and longstanding, and their recruitment focus on wide players makes Gakpo an obvious name to monitor. Yet interest and feasibility are two different things, particularly when Liverpool are trying to shape a forward line for a new season under Andoni Iraola.

From Liverpool’s side, there is logic in resisting any approach. Gakpo remains one of the more proven options in the squad across the front line and offers reliability, physical presence and end product. There is, however, a wider context to this story. Liverpool’s pursuit of elite attacking targets, including Bradley Barcola, would require major expenditure. If the club commit heavily in that area, there may be pressure to balance the books through departures. In that scenario, a player of Gakpo’s profile would naturally attract attention because he is established, desirable and saleable.

Even then, any such decision would need to make football sense first. Liverpool are not in a position where they can casually remove one of their strongest wide players and assume the issue resolves itself later in the window.

As an unsure Liverpool supporter, this is exactly the kind of report that leaves you uneasy rather than convinced. You can understand why Tottenham would like Cody Gakpo. He is experienced, he can play across the front line and he has delivered in big moments. So if another club is building a shortlist of wingers, his name belongs on it.

But from a Liverpool point of view, selling him feels risky. The squad already has enough moving parts, and there is a difference between refreshing the attack and creating fresh gaps that need filling. If the club are already working on a major winger signing, then losing Gakpo in the same window starts to feel like overcomplicating things.

There is also the trust factor. Supporters will back a big decision if the plan is obvious and well executed, but this one would need a very clear replacement strategy. Otherwise it could leave Liverpool lighter in a key area going into a demanding season.

So while this may be one to monitor, it still feels more like market noise than a deal gathering real pace. Unless Liverpool have something significant lined up behind the scenes, keeping Gakpo appears the safer and smarter call.
