On3 asks Texas A&M's 'most pressing question' before the 2026 season

Texas A&M's 2026 season-opener is three weeks away, as the Aggies will host Missouri State on Saturday, Sept. 5, and after making several changes to the coaching staff this offseason, coach Mike Elko will gamble on former wide receivers coach turned first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins calling plays for the first time in his career.

During Elko's first two seasons at the helm, former offensive coordinator Collin Klein was nationally regarded as one of the more innovative play callers in the country after leading the 2025 Aggie offense to average 33.8 points per game, while quarterback Marcel Reed threw for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions during his first full starting season.

On3's Ali Wasserman joins a long list of college football analysts who are unsure what Marcel Reed will look like with Wiggins calling plays, but it's important to note that Reed will be working with many, including myself, who consider the most talented wide receiver rotation in program history.

"Texas A&M made its first College Football Playoff appearance last year. That’s great, but there are consequences. The Aggies’ consequence was losing offensive coordinator Collin Klien, who returned to his alma mater to become head coach at Kansas State. Though quarterback Marcel Reed had a productive season last year, many still doubt he’s a top-notch quarterback. Concerns about Reed’s accuracy surfaced during former receiver KC Concepcion‘s NFL Draft preparation, and now the quarterback is with first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins."

A Broyles Award nominee, as soon as the Kansas State head coaching job opened up, Klein, who once starred at quarterback for the Wildcats, became the primary target, accepting the position weeks before the Aggies' first-round CFP game vs. Miami, and was a Heisman Trophy finalist after the 2012 season, eventually losing to Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel.

Holmon Wiggins served as Klein's co-OC during the last two seasons and was former Alabama coach Nick Saban's longtime wide receivers coach and assistant head coach before leaving to join Mike Elko's staff before the 2024 season. While his lack of play-calling experience seems problematic, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman stated on Saturday that Wiggins' scheme has been "very easy to learn."

It's also a misconception that KC Concepcion, whose main reason for transferring to Texas A&M was to play with Marcel Reed, has anything negative to say about his former signal-caller's minor accuracy issues, especially during the Aggies' CFP loss to Miami, which also included a critical drop by Concepcion.

With the addition of Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton, who stands 6'4" and 215 pounds, the combination of his size and Mario Craver, Ashton Bethel-Roman, and Terry Bussey's speed provides more than enough for Marcel Reed to match his 2025 production in Holmon Wiggins' scheme.
