Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey burst onto the NFL scene with an impressive rookie season, reeling in 82 catches for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.
Last year, McConkey regressed significantly in Greg Roman's offense — catching 66 passes for 789 yards and six touchdowns through the same number of games.
Now, McConkey is looking forward to beginning a new chapter under new offense coordinator Mike McDaniel.
"He's going to set us up for a lot more explosive plays. We're going to get the run game, pass game going — they're going to marry off each other. I'm super excited about that," McConkey said in an interview with NFL Network on Thursday. "I think [explosive plays] are going to be the biggest difference [this year]."
McDaniel recently discussed his plans to help quarterback Justin Herbert get the ball out of his hands faster this coming season.
"A lot of things I'm asking him to do take him out of his comfort zone, meaning guys with arm talent like he has, such a strong arm and great field vision, you want to protect the ball and want to confirm something before you throw it," McDaniel said Friday, via the team's official website.
"I'm challenging him to expedite that process and not confirm and let his feet talk to him and rip the ball. There were a couple times, one in particular on a throw to Ladd [McConkey], where he expressed to me today, 'Yeah, I was a little nervous throwing it that early.' But that's where you grow. In the front stages, I'm not worried about completion percentage. I'm not worried about picks, I'm worried about exposing yourself and challenging yourself."
The Chargers will begin their 2026 regular-season schedule with a Week 1 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 13.
