Trent McDuffie knows what championship teams look like, having won two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs in his first four seasons as a pro. Andy Reid is heralded as one of the best head coaches in football and right up there with him is Sean McVay.
Now a member of the Los Angeles Rams , McDuffie is seeing how McVay runs things. After only one training camp practice, McDuffie loves one aspect of McVay’s operation. He appreciates that the Rams coach immediately gets his players into 11-on-11 situations, specifically with the first-team offense facing the first-team defense.
“Yeah, I personally love it,” McDuffie said Sunday. “I know we'll get out here and do some one-on-ones, which as a DB I love. We get to work our craft. But you want to just talk about football, that's what football is, 11-on-11, best-on-best. You come out here, that's what we're going to do. And it also just helps you just mesh with everybody else. You can see how the d-line is playing, you can see how the linebackers play, you got to just feel how everybody plays in the game, especially for my first time being on the team so I can appreciate it and I just love the practice structure that Sean McVay has.”
Reid and McVay lead in very different ways, but they both get the most out of their players. McDuffie knows Reid is a future Hall of Famer and one of the all-time greats, but he’s a big fan of how McVay runs things in Los Angeles.
“Andy Reid, that's a Hall of Fame coach with a great culture over there but we have just as good of a guy over here with Sean McVay,” McDuffie said. “Just how he leads from the top. I think everybody just follows his philosophy, the way he does things, and I think he does a good job of just letting players be themselves. Letting players go in and talk to him and hear us out and also establishing this culture that you can be you, but you also just come in here to work. And as long as you come in here with the right attitude, with the right mindset, you can succeed. And he has a lot of coaches that are here that can get you to that next point but at the end of the day, it's all about whatever 11's out there on that field and how much we want to be out there and play for each other. I'm excited to be a part of this culture because so far, everything's been great.”
The Rams have yet to put the pads on but McDuffie is looking forward to the day that they do. That’s when the real football starts, allowing defenders to be more physical in coverage and at the line of scrimmage.
But for now, McDuffie’s just happy to be running team drills against the first-team offense.
