Our kids are college graduates, but we're paying their rent. We understand what they're up against.

My children are college graduates. I'm still paying their rent, and I'm OK with that.

A college degree may be an important step toward financial stability, but it takes time to accumulate and transfer wealth.

We cover rent, but the help comes with conversations, actionable planning, and an end date.

When our youngest child graduated from college, my husband and I were overwhelmed with pride. There we were, two first-generation college graduates who had somehow managed to get both of our children through college. But right next to that pride was another emotion: fear.

We weren't afraid that they wouldn't be successful; we've always believed in them. Our fear stemmed from knowing that a college degree doesn't always translate into financial stability. That's especially true for some Black graduates entering a financial system that hasn't historically given Black families the same opportunities to build and pass down wealth.

So, while I proudly watched my kids cross the stage to receive their diplomas, I was already thinking about what would come next. For us, that means continuing to pay their rent while they get their footing.

We've put thought into this decision

Our decision to pay our grown children's rent — ages 23 and 25 — may look like coddling to some people. But for us, it's intentional. Neither mine nor my husband's parents went to college, and we didn't have very many people to call when things got tight. Over the years, we've built a comfortable life without a safety net, one paycheck at a time. We're using that comfort to give our children the runway we never had.

There's data that backs up what my husband and I already know from experience. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Black college graduates , age 25 to 34, earn roughly $14,000 less per year than their white peers with the same degree. Additionally, more of them graduate with debt, with 52% of Black students graduating with at least $25,000 in student loan debt compared to 41% of white students according to a Survey of Consumer Finances by the Federal Reserve.

Even with our help, our children graduated with a small amount of student loan debt.

Our support comes with a plan

To give them both time to focus on building their careers and saving money, we pay their rent. Of course, this arrangement comes with a caveat. We talk openly about finances and set concrete goals to help them get closer to financial independence . Our conversations include a phase-out timeline, with a goal of ending our rent support six months to a year after they have consistently worked and saved, so they understand that their rent coverage isn't indefinite. This is something we'll reevaluate as a family over time.

We've set emergency fund targets and worked through credit-building strategies together. We even encourage them to save a little more anytime they can, so they're building a cushion of their own. To keep them motivated along the way and moving toward the finish line, we celebrate every milestone, such as reaching a savings goal or paying off a debt.

We're buying them time

We're not the only family doing this. A survey by AARP found that 75% of parents with a child age 18 or older support them in some way. A February 2026 Pew Research Center study found that nearly half of Black adults ages 18-29 (47%) reported they received financial assistance from family in the previous year.

Our plan isn't perfect, but we stand by it. Our intention is not to try and shield our children from the real world. We simply want to buy them time. Instead of worrying about a missed rent payment, they can focus on building their careers. We want to give them a foundation sturdy enough that, one day, they can build that bridge — or a stronger one — for their own kids.
