It’s been a busy year for Virginia Tech athletics. With so much of the attention focused on James Franklin and the football program, some of Virginia Tech’s other sports have flown under the radar. On Thursday, Mark Berman of The Roanoke Times delivered some important Virginia Tech coaching news.
Men’s basketball coach Mike Young, women’s basketball coach Megan Duffy, softball coach Pete D’Amour, men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach Sergio Lopez Miro and men’s soccer coach Mike Brizendine all received contract extensions. Berman also noted that wrestling coach Tony Robie received an extension earlier this year.
Young was entering the final year of his contract in 2026-27. Berman noted that the new extension is for one year, $3 million. It’s the same compensation package for the next two seasons. Young’s extension ensures that he doesn’t enter the upcoming season as a lame-duck coach.
In seven seasons as Virginia Tech’s head coach, Young has compiled a total record of 124-98, with a 60-70 record in ACC play. The most memorable moment of Young’s tenure in Blacksburg was the Hokies’ only ACC championship in 2022, when Virginia Tech blew out North Carolina and Duke in the semifinals and championship game, respectively.
Young was also the 2021 ACC Coach of the Year.
Duffy’s extension is also for one year, and she is now under contract through 2031. Duffy led the Lady Hokies to the NCAA Tournament last season in only her second year in Blacksburg.
D’Amour, who has led the Hokies to seven straight NCAA appearances, received a two-year extension. Lopez Miro’s extension is for three years,
