Bielema highlights NIL’s impact on revamped Illinois offense

CHICAGO — Tuesday morning marked the start of 2026 Big Ten Media Days in Chicago. The 2026 offseason has seen major roster departures and additions for Illinois, creating somewhat of a reset going into next season.

Coming off of a solid 9-4 season along with a victory at the Music City Bowl, there are expectations for Illinois to remain a competitor in the Big Ten. Head coach Bret Bielema, now entering his sixth season with the program, was the first coach to take the main stage, and shared a few remarks about how he views the landscape of recruiting and how it helped shape the current Illinois roster.

“The last three years, the quarterback I have now, we would not have gotten… Neither would my left tackle, my left guard, my center and my right tackle wouldn’t be here playing for me,” Bielema said during his press conference. “The transfer rule and revenue share, it’s a different world.”

This comes after making a remark saying the SEC “want(s) to live in 2005 forever.” Bielema clarified this wasn’t a jab at the competitiveness of the SEC, but more of a comment on how NIL has fundamentally changed how teams build their rosters. Any team can get any player, and Illinois certainly took advantage of that while retooling its offense.

The additions to the offense were definitely a focal point for Illinois after losing multiple key contributors to the NFL. Katin Houser was brought in to replace quarterback Luke Altmeyer. Houser had an impressive season last year at East Carolina throwing for 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns with just six interceptions.

With Houser going into his senior season, Bielema hopes his QB’s experience and leadership will translate into wins. This also goes for all the additions on the offensive line. Despite not having snaps at Illinois, guys like Christian Martin, Maika Matelau and Jake Renfro bring in tons of college experience.

“I think reps in college football are very, very important,” Bielema said. “And Katin Hauser has been a really good football player for a long time at East Carolina, so I’m counting on those reps to carry into Illinois as well.”

It may take some time to mesh, but Bielema and his staff have built a solid enough offensive infrastructure to compete in some tough matchups throughout the season. Early-season games against Duke and Ohio State will test how quickly the Illini can build the chemistry needed in order to remain a contender in the Big Ten.
