Satellite defense overwhelms Space Coast in statement Week 1 win

Satellite High and Space Coast Jr/Sr High knew the challenge both teams presented to one another when they agreed to meet on the first night of the 2026 football season after reaching the SSAA quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, last year.

On Aug. 13, it was the Scorpions who made the Week 1 statement forcing 6 turnovers and limiting the Vipers’ high-powered offense to one score in a 17-7 victory.

“I’m proud of them. It was a real gut test early in the year. I think that’s what you need. You’re not going to have many nights like this,” Satellite head coach Dan Burke said. “We got guys stepping in for guys playing positions that hadn’t really worked at. Just playing hard. Proud to watch them step in for each other.”

Last season, Space Coast recorded six turnovers in 13 games. It matched that total on Aug. 13 with 4 fumbles and 2 interceptions.

Satellite’s Max Lopez and Landen Mentillo intercepted Vipers quarterback Zion Sandy. Luke Herte recorded 2 strip sacks leading to fumble recoveries for Will Copeland and Lopez. Levi Mumme fell on a loose ball on a muffed punt and Herte recovered a fumble on Space Coast’s final offensive possession.

“I think it was a great performance. I think we all stepped up and played a big role,” Copeland said. “D-line did a great job coming off blocks. I think the amount of turnovers that we forced was incredible. Ridiculous amount.”

It was Lopez’s interception that changed the momentum of the game. After the Scorpions offense stalled out inside the 10-yard line resulting in a field goal, Lopez set up the offense for another red zone opportunity.

On a 3rd and goal from the 20, quarterback Brody Grennan connected with Noah Corriveau for the go-ahead touchdown with 7:10 remaining in the second quarter.

The score remained 10-7 until deep into the fourth quarter. Satellite put the game out of reach on an 11-yard touchdown run by Copeland that was set up by the Mentillo interception.

“It felt amazing. I told coach (Burke) in the huddle and he was like we need to put this game away,” Copeland said. “I told him to give me the ball and then I would score and that’s exactly what happened.”

Space Coast scored on the opening drive on a 35-yard touchdown pass by Sandy to Da’bar Fluellen on a 4th and 6 following a Satellite offsides penalty.

The Scorpions bunkered down defensively, preventing Space Coast from scoring the rest of the way despite numerous drives entering Satellite’s territory.

In addition to the six takeaways, Herte blocked Space Coast’s game-tying field goal attempt with 10:13 left in the fourth quarter.

“Luckily, we had all summer to watch (Sandy). He had a great season last year and he’s going to have a great season this year. He’s a great athlete,” Burke said. “We planned some things. We spied on him a little bit. That first drive they made some great plays. We were in position. They just made some plays.”

It was a stunning performance by Space Coast, who averaged 33.2 points per game last season.

“You’re not going to win any football games when you turn the ball over six times. We didn’t play well on offense. Just kept kicking our own selves. Give them credit. We got what we expected,” Space Coast head coach Jake Owens said. “We looked sloppy and you got to put drives together. We put our defense in some bad positions all night. Pretty much anything you could do to try to lose a football game we did.”

Despite the offensive struggles, Space Coast’s defense kept them in the game forcing 2 turnovers in the opening 4 minutes of the second half. The two ensuing Viper drives ended in a turnover and a blocked field goal.

“Defense did a great job keeping us in the game. They gave us two great opportunities down on their side of the field and we didn’t take advantage of it. You can’t do that on the road,” Owens said. “No matter how good you are, none of that stuff matters. If you don’t take advantage of opportunities and you make a lot of mistakes, you’re going to lose football games.”

Satellite will look to carry the momentum into Week 2 when it travels to Halifax Academy on Aug. 21.

“I think people are going to realize just how dominant our defense is,” Copeland said. “I think the rest of the games that we are going to play are going to be fearful of that.”

Space Coast will look to bounce back versus Umatilla in its home opener on Aug. 21.

“We’re going to fix the mistakes. We got a long season ahead of us,” Owens said. “We still got all of our goals and everything that we want to accomplish ahead of us, but we have to learn from this. We’re not sneaking up on anybody. Everybody know who we are now and we have to step up to the challenge.”
