Sarah Davies Smale now has two silver medals and one gold from her Commonwealth Games career [Getty Images]
England's Sarah Davies Smale had to settle for Commonwealth Games silver in the final of the women's 63kg weightlifting as Canada's Maude Charron claimed gold in Glasgow.
The 33-year-old from Preston, a gold medallist at the Birmingham Games four years ago, was in trouble early in the competition when she failed with her first two lifts in the snatch section of the competition.
A lift of 95kg with her third attempt put her through to the clean and jerk where she managed 122kg to guarantee herself at least silver.
With Canada's Charron leading the way, Davies Smale needed to raise the bar to 138kg with her final effort to take the gold but could not complete the lift.
Femily Crystie-Notte of Nauru took the bronze medal.
"The snatch portion was on brand, I felt strong but just couldn't quite feel where the bar was today," Davies Smale told TNT Sports.
She now has two silver medals and a gold from her four Commonwealth Games but is not ruling out competing at the 2030 competition in Ahmedabad.
"I'm lucky to be in the position I am and have the support I have. The National Lottery stuff allows me to keep training, keep my coaches, nutritionists and the whole team so as long as we can keep doing it we'll see where we end up."
