3 things we learned from the Bengals’ opening day 53-man roster

The Cincinnati Bengals’ final roster cuts had some surprises but nothing too shocking.

The main takeaway is that Zac Taylor and the front office put together a group of players that fits what the Bengals do and not one built on high upside or promise.

Here’s what we learned.

They like their tight ends

Five tight ends is a lot. But Taylor and offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher feature multiple tight end looks often and even keep them on the field as fullbacks.

Mike Gesicki is the starting-caliber receiving tight end. Erick All Jr. is superbly talented and just needs to stay healthy. Drew Sample made his name in blocking. Tanner Hudson has shown up as a receiver in the regular season. And Jack Endries gave us some splash plays in the preseason.

It’s not hard to see why all five were retained.

The focus is on the present

The Bengals let Charlie Jones go, even though he was a fourth round pick just in 2023 and, as Paul Dehner Jr. pointed out , the only NFL player with at least one return for a touchdown in each of the last three seasons.

Cincinnati also released McKinnley Jackson, a talented third-round pick in 2024 who had yet to put it all together.

In other words, they’re letting past production or unrealized potential be deciding factors. They want guys who are performing right now , this offseason. And that’s how Landon Robinson made it over Jackson and Dohnte Meyers, Colbie Young, and Ke’Shawn Williams made it over Jones.

It’s a different mindset and one that is fitting for a team with Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Dexter Lawrence, and only a few more years for that group to win a championship together.

They want fighters

This year’s roster is filled with inspiring stories, from Robinson, taken in the seventh round, to Meyers, who was a zero-star recruit who worked Door Dash until 3 AM so that he could fund his NFL dream. Then there’s the undrafted Jacob Bayer and Swayze Bozeman.

As Dehner Jr. wrote :

Those are the types of players who build winning chemistry rather than tear it apart. There will be games this year when each of these players will be counted on to do a job or help a teammate do a job. There will be no doubt in their ability to do so or desire to do anything that helps the team win.

The writer for The Athletic contrasted that with the players we’ve seen in the past who “you couldn’t say that about, whether it be staying out of trouble off the field, maintaining conditioning, knowing the playbook or, you know, showing up for stuff.”

So the takeaway from all this is that the Bengals know who they are and what they want to accomplish. They’re no longer justifying decisions in their minds. They’re going with what they see on the field and maintaining a sense of urgency.
