At least 20 people ransack Superior Grocers store during street takeover in South LA, LAPD says By Mónica De Anda and abc7.com staff Sunday, August 30, 2026 2:31PM Police are investigating after thieves burglarized a grocery store during a street takeover in South Los Angeles early Sunday morning. SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police are investigating after thieves burglarized a grocery store during a street takeover in South Los Angeles early Sunday morning.
At least 20 people broke into a Superior Grocers store located in the area of Manchester Avenue and San Pedro Street, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Officers responded at about 4:30 a.m. and took one person into custody, according to the LAPD.
Police said that the employees who were inside the store at the time of the break-in fled to the second floor of the store and barricaded themselves.
Police said they don't know how much the thieves took. It was also not immediately clear when the store would reopen to the public.
Several businesses have been targeted in street takeover-related crimes. AutoZone was broken into and looted four times, all within a span of a few days. The stores impacted were located in East L.A., Watts, and Downey. All of the incidents happened around 3 a.m.
And during the past week, a group of burglars broke into a Lorena Pharmacy store in Boyle Heights. Video shows the thieves cutting metal security bars on the windows, then smashing the glass and running inside. Moments later they ran out of the pharmacy with their arms full of items, the video shows.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has a task force dedicated to cracking down on these illegal street takeovers and the crimes that come after them.
