Caleb Williams was on the field for only eight plays Saturday night, but that was enough time to reopen one of the Chicago Bears ’ most important questions. Can this offense stop sabotaging itself when scoring opportunities arrive?

Williams completed two of five passes for 28 yards in his preseason debut, leading the Bears to a field goal on their opening possession in a 27-9 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals . Those numbers are hardly alarming in isolation. The issue was how the drive unraveled after Chicago reached the red zone against a defense composed primarily of Bengals reserves.

A holding penalty, a missed opportunity to Colston Loveland and two more incompletions turned a potential touchdown drive into three points.

It was only one possession. It also looked far too familiar.

Promising Bears drive ends with the same old frustration

Williams began his night with an encouraging completion to Rome Odunze and later found Loveland to advance Chicago to the Cincinnati 17-yard line.

Then the operation broke down.

Left tackle Braxton Jones was penalized for holding, forcing the Bears into first-and-20. Williams attempted to recover those yards by targeting Loveland down the seam, but the pass sailed high with the tight end open. Williams explained after the game that Cincinnati had busted the coverage and left Loveland available, even though the tight end was not the usual read against that defensive look.

“Just saw Colston running down the seam,” Williams said in his postgame press conference . “That’s not typically our read on that play when they get into that coverage. They ended up messing up on defense, tried to find the open guy, and just missed.”

That is a reasonable explanation. It does not change the result.

Williams had an opportunity to punish a defensive mistake and missed it. The Bengals then deflected his next pass at the line before an incompletion intended for Odunze brought out Cairo Santos.

The Bears never returned to the red zone with their starting offense.

Williams also correctly identified the deeper issue created by the penalty.

“If we get a penalty, it’s my job and the other guys’ jobs to try and get us back in position,” he said. “It’s not many calls that you can have for second-and-20s or third-and-20s.”

That is where the Bears’ offensive line put its quarterback. Williams has the rare talent to erase mistakes, but Chicago cannot build an offense around asking him to rescue every drive. A holding penalty on first down fundamentally changes Ben Johnson’s play sheet. The defense can attack the quarterback, the run game becomes less threatening and the margin for error disappears.

That became especially concerning because Cincinnati did not deploy its starting defense.

Williams and most of Chicago’s offensive starters were facing players fighting for backup roles and roster spots. Yet the Bears still could not finish their lone possession with a touchdown.

One preseason drive is not a referendum on Williams’ development. He led Chicago to a division title last season and produced some spectacular moments along the way. He also entered his second season with Johnson expected to have greater control of the offense.

That means the expectations are no longer limited to flashes.

Bears need cleaner football around Williams

Williams must hit Loveland when the defense hands him that opportunity. Jones cannot erase a red-zone arrival with a holding penalty. The entire unit must avoid putting itself in situations where one missed throw ends the drive. Johnson said afterward that penalties, third downs and red-zone failures were “major killers.” The Bears experienced all three on the same possession.

There is no reason for panic after five pass attempts in August. There is reason for urgency. Chicago has surrounded Williams with Loveland, Odunze, DJ Moore and a coaching staff designed to maximize his ability. That collection of talent should produce touchdowns against an opponent’s second unit.

Instead, the Bears settled for a field goal and spent the rest of the night watching their backups fall further behind.

Williams’ debut was brief, but its message was clear: Chicago’s offense has too much talent to keep losing battles against itself.
