Marli Salmon has signed his first professional contract with Arsenal , completing the agreement on his 17th birthday after establishing himself as one of Hale End ’s leading prospects.
The defender, who can operate at centre-back or right-back, put pen to paper this week, with the club announcing the deal on Saturday, another important step in a rapid rise that has already taken him from Arsenal’s academy into the senior side.
“It means a lot to me,” Marli said after signing his contract, “A lot of hard work went into this, a lot of ups and downs, but I’m so proud.
“I think it’s a proud moment for my family as well, I think it’s a reward for them as well, because they put so much time and effort into me. It’s proof of their hard work as much as mine.”

Salmon is from Leytonstone in east London and joined Arsenal at under-11 level in May 2019.
He arrived as an attacker before being moved into central defence during his trial period, a change that led us to where we are today.
“I was an attacker in those days, so it was a bit different, but it was good.” Marli said, reflecting on the start of his Arsenal journey.
“It sounds kind of cliched but it’s a lot of ups and downs, a lot of tough times. Sometimes you really go through adversity, but it’s built me to the person I am today, so I’m thankful for it.”

His progress has since included captaining Arsenal’s Under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League and spending time around the first team, an experience he regards as an important part of his education.
“It’s always a good experience to be around [the first team]. You learn so much, not even just on the pitch, but off the pitch, about how they prepare and how they carry themselves.
“It’s valuable, I’m so grateful for who I’ve got here. You get to learn and see them in person, you see so much detail, it’s very good.”
Salmon was only 15 when he travelled on Arsenal’s 2025 pre-season tour of Asia. His competitive senior debut followed in December that year, away to Club Brugge in the Champions League .

He replaced Ben White during Arsenal’s 3-0 victory at the age of 16 years and 103 days, becoming the club’s youngest debutant in European competition and their fourth-youngest first-team player overall.
“Being around that was amazing. You see so many one-percents that go into it.
“It’s a long season, so there’s so many things that change and happen, but really keeping that level over that period of time, it takes a lot. It’s a lot of little things that push you to be a champion.”
Salmon finished 2025-26 with four competitive first-team appearances, including a start against Mansfield Town in the FA Cup .
His case for further senior involvement was strengthened during Arsenal’s 2026 pre-season programme, particularly through his performances against Borussia Dortmund and Como .
“I’m looking forward to attacking the season. I gave myself a good start, so let’s see what it holds.”
