It flew under the radar, but last week, during the New Mexico High School Coaches Association annual summer conference, there were discussions — not the first, but the latest — about adding a second state wrestling tournament to the calendar.
But this one, a team dual event, would be conducted not under the banner of the New Mexico Activities Association but by the NMHSCA itself. And if it comes to fruition, it would likely be held early in the calendar year.
NMHSCA Executive Director Angel Castillo said this could come sooner rather than later.
“We’re gonna work on some different scenarios that we can present to the coaches,” Castillo said. “If we could do it next year, that would be awesome, but there’s still a lot of work to do.”
The NMAA briefly (2001-04) conducted multiple state wrestling tournaments for the boys, one for team duals and the other more traditional format that remains today. They were held back-to-back.
Castillo believes a new event could help increase participation in the sport.
“It should be enticing to a lot of these kids,” he said.
The format for a second state tournament is also under discussion. At current, there are three divisions in the NMAA’s February state tournament: 5A boys, 1A-4A boys and one overall tournament for the girls.
And an early thought for a state team dual event is that it would include the top eight teams in each of those divisions.

The University of New Mexico men’s track and field program on Wednesday announced on X that Nwagbo had signed to join the Lobos.
