Boston Red Sox second baseman Nick Sogard was not permitted to advance on a wild pitch by New York Yankees starter Carlos Rodon in the fifth inning of the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.

Adley Rutschman scored from third base, while Sogard raced from second to third. To the surprise of the commentators, the on-field umpires sent Sogard back to second base, then to third, and then to second again without providing a clear explanation.

Yankees Bounced Back Against the Red Sox in the 2nd Game of Saturday’s Doubleheader

The second game was all about the Yankees’ offense, as the Bronx Bombers piled on runs against their intra-divisional rivals. New York sealed a 9-2 win to split the doubleheader and take a 2-1 lead in the four-game series, with the finale set for Sunday.

Ben Rice led the fightback with three RBIs, followed by catcher Austin Wells (2 RBIs) and Luis Garcia Jr., who finished the game 3-for-4. It was a complete bullpen game for the home side, as they used seven pitchers, starting with Max Fried and ending with Brendan Beck.

The Yankees and the Red Sox are in a tight battle for the Wild Card spots in the American League. New York is 77-59, holding the second spot in the AL East standings, while Boston is third, just three games behind the Yankees with a 74-62 overall record.
