White Sox Prospect Breaks His Leg During Rehab Assignment

Chicago White Sox infield prospect William Bergolla Jr. has one of the most unique skill sets in the organization.

In an age of exit velocity, slugging percentage, and three true outcome hitters taking over baseball, Bergolla is a blast from the past. He is a contact hitter with elite bat to ball skills who would have thrived during the small ball era.

Even in the modern game, though, these players can be highly impactful for a big league team. They may not rank highly on national prospect lists before reaching the majors, as those rankings are almost always based on the traditional tools that give a player a high ceiling. But look at Steven Kwan with the Cleveland Guardians or the long and successful career Luis Arraez has had in Major League Baseball.

There is still value in contact hitters if they put the ball in play often enough. Bergolla certainly does that.

During White Sox spring training in 2026, Bergolla had 33 plate appearances and saw 89 pitches before recording his first swing and miss. It should come as no surprise that he started the regular season with a .457 batting average through 10 games with the Triple A Charlotte Knights.

Unfortunately, adversity started to set in for Bergolla after that incredible start to the season. He landed on the injured list with a shin bruise after colliding with Sam Antonacci in the outfield back in April and did not return to the field until this past weekend.

The White Sox sent Bergolla on a rehab assignment to the Arizona Complex League with hopes of getting him healthy enough to serve as MLB depth and potentially become a trade chip at the deadline. He is the No. 6 prospect in the White Sox organization but has no clear path to playing time at the MLB level, making him a viable candidate to be moved.

His rehab assignment quickly turned into a disaster for Chicago.

Bergolla was jumping on the field when he suffered a stress fracture in his right fibula during his first game in the Arizona Complex League after just two plate appearances.

He is now done for the season, and his trade value has completely cratered, making it difficult for the White Sox to move him over the next week.

Beyond the trade implications, Bergolla has lost his age 21 season to injuries, costing him valuable experience and development. His start to the year was incredibly encouraging and pointed toward a potential future with the White Sox. But it was already difficult to get excited about a prospect with more than 1,100 professional plate appearances and only one career home run.

Add in a lost season because of injury, and it further complicates Bergolla’s standing within the organization and his future outlook.

The MLB trade deadline is Monday, August 3, and the White Sox will undoubtedly be looking to make a deal before then. But I no longer expect Bergolla to be involved in any trade.
