Fred Vasseur Admits Lack of Practice Data Doomed Ferrari’s Hungarian GP

Scuderia Ferrari arrived at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix hoping the tight, twisty layout of the Hungaroring would play to the strengths of their SF-26 chassis. Instead, Sunday afternoon unraveled into a masterclass of strategic frustration, punctuated by late pit stops, a time penalty, and a glaring lack of tire data.

While Red Bull’s Max Verstappen successfully managed a long, aggressive stint on the soft compound tires late in the race, Ferrari found themselves unable to replicate the feat.

Now, Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur is shedding light on exactly why the pit wall hesitated, admitting that a compromised free practice program forced the team into a strategic corner.

Ferrari’s “Two Bets” That Failed

Following a weekend where Lewis Hamilton saw a late-race Virtual Safety Car (VSC) gamble backfire into a frustrating fifth-place finish, the post-race interview revealed Vasseur’s blunt assessment of the team’s tire management logic.

According to Vasseur, attempting to mimic Red Bull’s late-race soft tire push was never seriously on the table for the Italian outfit.

“We never considered RB’s strategy because we pitted a little earlier than Max, and it seemed too ambitious to think we could go to the end of the race without taking tyre life into account,” Vasseur explained.

The root cause of that hesitation? A severe lack of long-run data gathered prior to Sunday.

“The reality was different. We didn’t have the opportunity to complete a long run on all three tyre compounds during free practice, so we made two bets,” Vasseur admitted in the screenshot. “Today, I can say those bets didn’t pay off.”

A Costly Late-Race Gamble

Ferrari’s lack of long-run confidence was exposed during the closing stages of the Grand Prix. With 16 laps remaining in the race, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri suffered a gearbox failure that triggered a brief VSC period.

Rather than trusting their existing rubber to hold off a charging Verstappen, Ferrari’s pit wall blinked. The team called Hamilton into the pits, attempting to utilize an undercut strategy with a fresh set of soft tires to push to the checkered flag.

However, the gamble to surrender track position completely backfired . Hamilton was not only forced to relinquish his podium spot to Verstappen, but a slight miscalculation on the pit limiter exiting the box slapped the seven-time champion with a razor-thin 0.1 km/h speeding penalty.

Without the crucial free practice data to properly model tire degradation on the Hungaroring’s demanding surface, Ferrari was left flying blind against a Red Bull squad that executed perfectly. As the 2026 season marches toward the summer break, Vasseur’s squad must figure out how to lock in their setups earlier in the weekend, or risk making more losing bets on Sunday.
