RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- Two 14-year-old boys were rushed to the hospital with major injuries after being hit by a driver as they were riding an e-scooter and e-motorcycle in Riverside.

The two teenagers were riding down Mitchell Avenue around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Riverside Police Department. They were struck while attempting to cross Arlington Avenue just as a Lexus sedan was entering the intersection.

Both victims were taken to the hospital with major injuries in extremely critical condition.

Video from the scene shows significant damage to the windshield of that car. Debris from the e-scooter and e-motorcycles was also seen strewn across the street and under the car.

The 88-year-old driver of the Lexus stayed at the scene. It's unclear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Residents in the area say the neighborhood is popular among e-bike riders because of the rolling hills and limited amount of speed bumps. Many of them heard the impact of the crash.

"I was in my house and just heard a loud bang, like a car crash," said resident Clarissa Alvarado. "... I saw all the cops and ambulance, fire trucks come out. The lady that actually lives here... she told me that the two little boys got hit, one flew, one was stuck in the window."

This comes just weeks after students within the Riverside Unified School District and Alvord Unified School District returned to school, as well as a growing trend in e-bike injuries across Southern California.

In Riverside County, emergency room visits for 10 to 14-year-olds with e-bike injuries more than doubled in 2025 from the year before. At least 416 incidents have been reported so far in 2026.

Data also show that 10 to 24-year-olds are most likely to be involved in e-bike incidents.
