The company issued a voluntary recall of its requeson and soft ricotta products on June 3, then expanded the recall on June 18 to cover all cheese products made at the facility, including hard cheeses, after ongoing contamination concerns.

The CDC and FDA have traced the outbreak to illness-onset dates spanning March 2023 to June 2026. As of the agencies’ most recent update, 12 people across four states, Illinois, Maryland, New York and Virginia, have been confirmed infected with the outbreak strain of listeria. Ten of those people were hospitalized, and one died. Maryland’s health department suspended Clover Hill Dairy’s operating license amid the investigation.

Two other companies issued related recalls after distributing Clover Hill Dairy product further down the supply chain. Nelson & Isa Lacteos, LLC, a Bay Shore, New York, distributor, recalled requeson cheese sold at retail locations in New York between May 15 and May 28 after a sample tested positive for the outbreak strain. La Ceiba Foods Latin Market Inc. recalled repackaged Requesón Salvadoreño and Requesón Mexicano cottage cheese products, sold under the La Colonia and Selectos Latinos brand names, that had been distributed to supermarkets, retail stores and restaurants in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Confirmed product distribution spans Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C., though officials note the cheese could have reached additional states through further redistribution. Because affected cheese was often relabeled or repackaged before reaching consumers, it may appear under several different brand names, including Kesso, Quesos La Ricura, Izalco, De Mi Pueblo and Rio Lindo. The investigation remains ongoing.
