There is also a concern about settling for the cheaper alternative because the first-choice option is too expensive. Fans have seen enough transfer windows to know that going down a level in the market can leave a squad short of the quality required to compete for the biggest honours.

Conceicao could still develop into an excellent signing, and good recruitment departments are paid to spot that before everybody else. Even so, the instinctive reaction here is caution.
