The organization announced that the professional bowler died “unexpectedly” on Friday, July 31. No cause of death was shared.
Butturff was remembered by PBA Commissioner Tom Clark as “one of the most unique players in PBA history.”
“Fans marveled at his delivery, as he rode a wave of strikes into becoming a top player in the sport, capable of winning at any time, in any event,” continued Clark.
“Jakob was kind, he was respectful, and he was a champion. He will never be forgotten. Our hearts are with all Butters touched on his one-of-a-kind journey,” he added.

Butturf, whose loved ones nicknamed him “Butters,” rose to prominence during the 2016 season, during which he won his first two PBA Tour titles, dominated the PBA Regional Tour and earned West Region and Northwest Region Player of the Year honors, per the PBA.
Over the following two years, he amassed 27 PBA Regional Tour titles, the organization said.
In addition to being named PBA Tour champion eight times, Butturf won during the 2019 USBC Masters and the 2017 QubicaAMF World Cup, and he helped Team USA win multiple gold and silver medals as a seven-time member of the team.
Butturf was born and raised in Las Vegas. He later lived in Phoenix, Ariz., and Binghamton, N.Y.
“It ain’t supposed to be like this,” fellow bowler EJ Tackett wrote in a social media tribute about Butturff, per the PBA. “It’s nothing short of soul-crushing.”
“The bowling world lost today, and it will never be the same,” he added. “We all love you buddy. Until we meet again my friend.”
“Butters, I don’t even have the words right now, but just know you will be missed, loved, and always remembered!” A.J. Johnson wrote to the late bowler in his own tribute, according to the PBA. “You had one of the biggest hearts and made everyone laugh! I love you Butters, now go give your mom the biggest hug you always gave us!”

“The PBA has lost one of its kindest,” professional bowler Jason Belmonte wrote on Instagram following Butturff’s sudden death. ”I am in complete shock.”
“This was Jakob,” he continued, sharing a throwback photo of himself and Butturff moments after the 2019 PBA World Championship. “A fierce competitor who every single time he laced his shoes up, he gave it everything. This, intertwined with a heart that had nothing but love for all made him special. Miss you mate!”
