HSV unveil new leadership group for 2026/27 season

Hamburger SV have announced a new leadership group ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with head coach Merlin Polzin appointing Nicolai Remberg as the club’s new captain.

Remberg succeeds Yussuf Poulsen, who wore the armband last season. The midfielder becomes HSV’s 33rd captain since the Bundesliga was founded in 1963, having already captained the side in two matches during the previous campaign.

Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nicolas Capaldo have been named as vice-captains, while Poulsen will remain an influential figure within the squad despite relinquishing the captaincy.

“It’s something very special for me to be the new captain of HSV. My career has never been a steep climb, but a steady upward trajectory because I’ve always worked on myself, and I will continue to set that example as captain. I will lead by example on and off the pitch and always demand that our team gives 100 percent. At the same time, the team can expect full support and complete trust from Sambi (Lokonga), Capi (Capaldo) and me, with Yussi (Poulsen) by our side,” said Remberg.

Polzin also explained the thinking behind his leadership group.

“Rambo (Remberg) has incredibly high standards for himself and tries to push his limits every day. This drive and mentality are what our HSV should stand for, so that we can all take the next step together. Alongside Rambo as a top performer, we have Sambi as a strategist and Capi as an emotional leader, both of whom set high standards and positively influence the rest of the group. Yussi also supports the trio and the entire team with his tremendous international experience.”

The newly appointed leadership group will now look to guide HSV through another solid Bundesliga campaign as they look to build upon last season’s 13th place finish.
