Comedian Andrew Schulz defends Caitlin Clark from backlash after recent comments

Comedian Andrew Schulz was disheartened to see how the media treated Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark after she refused to engage in recent political debates around the WNBA.

Clark’s teammate Sophie Cunningham unleashed a media firestorm on the Fever and the WNBA with her comments about protecting biological women in women’s sports.

After protests and intense media scrutiny around the matter, Clark’s only public comment on the matter was to focus on basketball, which enraged many.

Andrew Schulz blasts media treatment of Caitlin Clark as ‘unfair’

On the latest episode of the ‘Flagrant’ podcast, comedian Andrew Schulz blasted how Clark has been villainised by conservatives for not supporting their side when she did what most athletes are asked to do and focus on their sport.

“It was so unfair what they did to Caitlin Clark.”

“She literally did the thing that every conservative pundit was asking all the black athletes to do around Black Lives Matter. Remember, they were like, ‘Just shut up and dribble.’ She literally shuts up and dribbles… and then all the pundits are like, ‘You coward. How dare you not say anything?’ Do you want athletes to just play ball, or do you want them involved in politics?”

Schulz points out a very pertinent hypocrisy in political debates when athletes get involved. One side will tell them to focus and ‘shut up and dribble’ while the other side will criticize them for not taking a side.

This has been happening for years, and it’s not surprising to see the most famous player in the WNBA being subjected to the same.

What did Caitlin Clark say?

After Cunningham’s comments led to protests outside Fever games and public in-arena displays of support for Sophie, Clark categorically shared her stance on the matter by reiterating her focus on winning games for the Fever.

“It’s not a discussion we have in our locker room; it’s for the leagues and the governing bodies to find solutions. My focus is on basketball and how we can get wins.”

This is the answer a fan of a sports team wants to hear, as their players need to be focused on winning games. Unfortunately, it’s not an answer that can serve political agendas, which is why the political backlash has been significant.

Clark is averaging 21.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 8.0 assists this season, and is considered a WNBA MVP candidate, so she will continue to focus on the court until the season is over.
