July 27: West vs. East golf ends in tie for first time
History was made Monday at KickingBird Golf Club in Edmond.
For the first time, the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State golf event ended in a tie as the West and East teams each finished with an overall score of 24.
The event is a match-play tournament, and scores from the boys and girls teams are added to a cumulative total.
The West boys beat the East 13½-10½, while the East girls won by the same score.
For golfers like Heritage Hall standout Gabriella Gross, it was a fun day, although the brutal heat made it tough at times.

“We haven’t been playing as much as we did in high school season and stuff, but we were confident,” said Gross, who competed with Edmond North star and Jacksonville University signee Abbie Justiz. “We played yesterday and we played well, so it was more of like a try to minimize mistakes and just play good golf.”
Gross and Justiz played against Stillwater’s Nikki Pitts and Sequoyah-Tahlequah’s Kodee Bearpaw-Pritchett.
Gross and Justiz earned three points for the West, while Pitts and Bearpaw-Pritchett got one point.
Gross finished in a tie for second place at the Class 3A state tournament in May and was named The Oklahoman’s All-City Golfer of the Year.
She had Division-I offers but won’t play in college, so Monday was special and had some similarities to her high school career as a whole.
“You get that team aspect,” Gross said. “I like that I got to do that one last time and it was fun and we got to do it with really good players.”
