Since its release roughly two months ago, it has sold 20 million copies, a figure that almost certainly makes it the highest-selling game of the year so far. The developer duo behind the game, lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro, posted the announcement on the game’s Steam news hub.

In early July, Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics reported that Meccha Chameleon was the top seller for the first half of 2026 with 12.6 million copies sold. The closest competitors were FC26 at 9.1 million, Resident Evil Requiem at 7.5 million, Forza Horizon 6 at 7.4 million , Arc Raiders at 7.4 million, and Slay the Spire 2 at 7 million. Strangely enough, the biggest breakout since then has been the PlayStation 4 and 5 ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Black Ops , which sold 8.2 million and 3 million, respectively, in July.

For those who haven’t played Meccha Chameleon , it’s a hide-and-seek game where players disguise themselves in the environment using digital painting tools. Between its unique spin on prop hunt-style games and its propensity for creating hilarious moments, it has become the latest “friendslop” sensation.

Unfortunately, there were some not-so-great cybersecurity problems around the game last month. An independent researcher found that hackers had placed viruses inside certain user-created Steam Workshop maps for the game. Once launched, these maps would run an invisible command prompt that installed a remote access Trojan, allowing the hackers to control the victim’s PC remotely. A developer's test computer was hacked via this method, with the attacker temporarily taking over the game’s official Discord channel. They eventually patched the issue, but it’s unclear how many users were affected.

Still, even with this unpleasant situation, it’s clear that Meccha Chameleon has continued to sell quite well. It may have dipped quite a bit from its Steam peak of over 340,000 concurrent players, but the game’s success so far has been nothing short of sensational. Last year, Peak and R.E.P.O. were similarly popular , attracting 14.5 million and 19.2 million players respectively. Despite the genre’s derisive nickname, it’s clear that friendslop is here to stay.
