Naomi Osaka’s U.S. Open mixed doubles partner, Kei Nishikori, shared a priceless response when asked about the tournament, joking that he was more concerned about his fashion than his schedule.

While Osaka is competing at the Mubadala DC Open, she is also set to team up with Nishikori in the U.S. Open mixed doubles event. Nishikori’s campaign in Washington came to an end on Wednesday after a loss to Rafael Jodar.

During his post-match press conference, Nishikori was asked whether he was worried about a potential clash between his U.S. Open mixed doubles event and the qualifying schedule. Instead of addressing the scheduling issue, the Japanese star joked that he was more concerned about what he would wear, praising Osaka’s stylish on-court outfits:

“I’m not worried about schedule conflict between USO mixed doubles & qualifying at all. I’m rather thinking about what to dress. If Naomi-chan appears in awesome clothes, I should match my outfit with hers. It’s the only thing I’m worried, rather than schedule.”

Osaka is competing at the Mubadala DC Open. She advanced to the quarterfinals after Ashlyn Krueger retired with a right ankle injury while trailing 6-3, 3-1 in their second-round match. Osaka is now set to face Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the quarterfinal on July 31.

Siegemund also expressed her frustration over the extra time Osaka was given to change into her playing outfit. Responding to the German’s comment in her own post-match press conference, Naomi Osaka calmly explained why fashion plays an important part for her during the tournaments.

“When I first saw the dress in real life, I felt like I looked like the Eiffel Tower at night-time when it’s sparkling. Sometimes people say athletes in show business or entertainer or whatever. I feel like, for me, Grand Slam walk-ons are the only time that I possibly feel like I’m an entertainer. You know, I like to keep people on their toes. I think it’s really fun,” said Naomi Osaka.
