Every summer, the SEC preview writes itself the same way: Point at the blue bloods and skip over the inner conference wars due to the sheer number of good games played in conference. We're going to do it a little differently this year, because each team has at least one offseason storyline worth exploring.
The betting market crowned Texas (+310) and Georgia (+325) co-favorites to win the conference. Our model has those exact two teams as its two biggest win total fades on the board. That's not contrarian for sport, it's what happens when you drop a projection model into the most quarterback-uncertain SEC in recent memory and let it count coin-flip battles.
That's the whole story for the conference in 2026: breaking in a new quarterback. New starters everywhere, most of them talented, almost none of them proven in this league.
Let's break it down.
Who wins the SEC?
The board is chalk on top: Texas +310, Georgia +325, Texas A&M +850, Alabama and LSU +900, Ole Miss 11-1. Our projections tell a flatter story.
Georgia (9.3 wins) noses ahead of Alabama (8.8), while Texas, Ole Miss (8.4) and Oklahoma (8.3) are all bunched together. There is no runaway. So the ticket to hoist the trophy isn't the chalk we're fading. It's the one contender our model actually likes on the season, at a fraction of the price. More on that below.
First, here the three season win totals I like most, which all lean into the exact QB uncertainty the market keeps overpaying to ignore.
Favorite season win total bets
Texas under 9.5 wins (-140)
Projected wins: 8.4
My headline fade in the conference. Texas is the preseason darling with Arch Manning under center and a loaded skill corps. The talent is undeniable, but the 9.5-win price is the problem.
We grade Texas No. 2 in the SEC on offense and No. 4 on defense — very good but not dominant — and the Longhorns drew the single toughest schedule in the country. Steve Sarkisian also swapped coordinators, with Will Muschamp inheriting the side that carried them. We land at 8.4, over a full win under the number, and Bill Connelly's SP+ is under it as well at 8.6.
Both models see a very good team that the market priced great on hype alone. That's how a 10-win roster finishes 8-4 and calls it a disappointment.
Florida under 7.5 wins (-140)
Projected wins: 6.2
Our single biggest edge on the board. Jon Sumrall is a real hire and the arrow is genuinely up, which is the trap, because the market already bought the bounce back and stuck Florida at 7.5. The defense is the strength, as Brad White's unit has a nasty edge rush. The offense is the problem, and it's a big one, since we grade it near last in the SEC. New quarterback Aaron Philo, in from Georgia Tech, has to prove it at this level behind a skill group that's still coming together.
We have Florida at 6.2, a full win under, and SP+ backs it at 7.0. The market is pricing optimism while models are pricing the roster on the field.
Oklahoma over 7.5 wins (-135)
Projected wins: 8.3
Oklahoma's defense is elite and that was never a question. We ranked it No. 1 in the SEC, and it was top five in SP+ a year ago. This isn't a leap of faith on the team, it's a bet on a soft number, and the reason it works lives on offense. The run game ranked 124th in the country last year, and QB John Mateer is good when healthy but carries an injury history, though Brett Venables rebuilt the line through the portal.
We have Oklahoma at 8.3 wins, well clear of the 7.5. If Mateer stays upright, that defense drags this group to eight or nine wins on its own. Give me the over.

One title wager
Ole Miss to win the SEC (11-1)
Here's the tension our own numbers create. We project Ole Miss (8.4 wins) dead even with Texas, and Texas is +310 to win the league while Ole Miss sits at +1100. Everyone booked the crater when Kiffin bolted for LSU and tried to poach the roster on the way out. It never came. Pete Golding kept the core, and the offense still grades number four in the SEC. This is a dart, not a hammer, the Deuce Knight and Trinidad Chambliss quarterback battle brings a fun story line and at 11 to 1 you're getting a real contender priced like an afterthought. If you're buying a title ticket in this league, buy the number, not the logo.
