Trump’s support among Republicans falls to its lowest mark on record, poll reveals

The Trump administration continues to struggle with an unpopular war in Iran and stubborn inflation eroding Americans’ purchasing power

Republican support of President Donald Trump has fallen to its lowest mark on record as his second term is bogged down by the Iran war and the high cost of living , a new poll has revealed.

Just 78 percent of Republicans approve of the job Trump is doing, according to a CNN poll conducted by research firm SSRS from Thursday to Monday. While this is still a majority of the GOP, it’s a notable shift given how prominent Trump’s MAGA base is in the party.

Trump’s approval rating among Republicans has seen a 10-point drop since he returned to the White House. In a CNN/SSRS poll conducted in February 2025, 88 percent of Republicans approved of the way Trump was handling his job.

The president’s overall approval rating sits at a dismal 34 percent in CNN’s new poll as Americans struggle with stubborn inflation and high gas prices brought on by the Iran war that has dragged on for five months.

Just 25 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of inflation, and 21 percent approve of his handling of gas prices.

The GOP remains fairly split on both issues.

Fifty-seven percent of Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of inflation while 43 percent disapprove. Republicans have a bit of a harder time supporting high gas prices, with 48 percent approving of how Trump is handling the issue while 52 percent disapprove.

The annual inflation rate in June was 3.5 percent, according to the Consumer Price Index, which the federal government uses to track the cost of goods and services over time. That’s nearly one point higher than in February 2025, when the annual inflation rate sat at 2.8 percent.

Americans are struggling to afford everyday necessities, including food and gas. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil waterway in the Middle East, has remained choked off during the Iran war, leading to higher fuel costs.

The national average price of a gallon of gas was more than $4 Wednesday, according to the AAA motor club. When the U.S. and Israel began striking Iran in late February, gas prices were just below $3 a gallon, according to the Associated Press .

Just 28 percent of Americans, including 66 percent of Republicans, approve of Trump’s handling of the Iran war, which has remained in limbo after the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran fell apart earlier this month. The U.S. military continued striking Iran Wednesday night after it accused Iran of attempting to attack American forces in the Middle East.

Trump’s bleak approval numbers come as top pollster Nate Silver suggested Americans may be shifting their attention away from a political figure who has captured headlines for more than a decade.

“It's kind of striking how, apart from Iran, most of the Trump-related stories this summer have been boring and dumb (reflection pool, White House Correspondents' Dinner) or kind of funny (FIFA), maybe we're moving on from him being the central figure in American politics,” Silver wrote on X Sunday.
