Hall of Fame Jockey Robby Albarado Dies at 52 Following Heart Complications

The horse racing industry is remembering one of its most accomplished riders following the death of Robby Albarado, whose skill in the saddle and dedication to the sport left a lasting impression on racetracks across North America.

Albarado died Aug. 4 in Saratoga Springs, New York, at the age of 52 after experiencing complications following a recent heart attack and heart surgery. His death was confirmed by longtime friend and trainer  Ken McPeek , for whom Albarado continued working even after retiring from race riding.

Born and raised in Louisiana, Albarado developed into one of Thoroughbred racing's elite jockeys. During a professional career spanning more than three decades, he recorded 5,222 career victories while guiding horses to more than $221 million in purse earnings. His consistency, work ethic and horsemanship earned him respect throughout the racing industry.

Among his greatest achievements were two victories in the Preakness Stakes, one aboard the legendary Curlin in 2007 and another with Swiss Skydiver in 2020. His partnership with Curlin also included victories in the Breeders' Cup Classic and several other marquee races, helping cement the colt's place among racing's all time greats.

Albarado was equally instrumental in the success of Mineshaft, riding the champion through multiple Grade 1 victories during the horse's Horse of the Year campaign.

While fans often remember the trophies and prestigious races, fellow horsemen frequently pointed to Albarado's quiet professionalism and connection with horses as defining qualities of his career.

Although he retired from competitive riding in 2021, Albarado remained active in the sport. He continued exercising horses each morning for McPeek's stable, mentoring younger riders and contributing to the preparation of future stakes contenders.

According to McPeek, Albarado had recently undergone surgery after suffering a heart attack. He had been recovering in Saratoga when he unexpectedly passed away.

The news spread quickly throughout the racing world, prompting tributes from jockeys, trainers and fans who reflected on both his accomplishments and his character.

Throughout his career, Albarado enjoyed tremendous success at  Churchill Downs , where he became one of the track's most successful riders and accumulated dozens of stakes victories. His achievements eventually earned him induction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, recognizing a career built on talent, perseverance and consistency.

His influence reached beyond the winner's circle. Young jockeys admired his horsemanship, trainers trusted his instincts, and owners valued his commitment to getting the very best from every horse he rode.

While statistics tell part of Albarado's story, they cannot fully measure the respect he earned from those who worked alongside him every day. Whether competing in Triple Crown races or quietly helping prepare horses before dawn, he approached the sport with humility and professionalism.
