Matthew Stafford is obviously the Los Angeles Rams ' quarterback today and for as long as he wants the title. But, head coach Sean McVay is a forward-thinking kind of guy. That's why the Rams surprised the NFL world when they drafted quarterback Ty Simpson out of Alabama with the 13th overall pick.
It would go a bit too far to say that Simpson is a lock to take over for Stafford when he's ready to retire. But, he certainly inched closer with his performance in the Rams' first preseason game on Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs .

Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report dubs Simpson a strong "winner" out of the early preseason games.
In the piece, he notes that "in a week where Pittsburgh's Drew Allar and Fernando Mendoza of the Raiders both impressed in their professional debuts, Simpson may have had the best performance of the lot—just four incompletions in 25 attempts, 190 passing yards, two scores and a passer rating of 125."
