BOSTON — In the month of May, Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran smacked nine homers.
Three months later, he appears to be heating up again when it comes to the long ball. Duran homered in the second inning of the Red Sox’ 13-1 wipeout of the Athletics . The homer was his third in the last five games since the calendar flipped to August.
“Just putting good swings on the ball, trusting my process,” said Duran, “and trusting my plan at the plate and it’s just been working for me. Honestly, it’s just about trusting myself and trying my approach at the plate and not skewing from it. That’s kind of something that I struggle with a lot — I get too anxious and I don’t trust my process and it shows when I start to chase and stuff.”
Duran’s homer was hit into the Monster Seats, and his ability to hit the ball hard the other way is generally a good indicator that he’s on a good run.
“I’d like to say that the game is that easy, that I can guide the ball that way,” said Duran. “But it happens when my swing’s in a good place and the pitch takes me that way then I just go with it. It’s not like force or anything like that; these guys are throwing too hard and (throwing) too many good pitches to be able to force it that way. But when I’m in a good spot and the balls are out there, the ball goes that way.”
His recent spate of homers is part of a larger upturn at the plate. He’s hitting .302 with an OPS of .830 over the last 14 games.
Now that he’s hitting the ball out of the ballpark, his bat helps deepen the Red Sox’ batting order in the bottom third of the lineup.
“He’s in a good rhythm right now,” said interim manager Chad Tracy, “and he’s seeing the ball well and putting good swings on it. I’ve said, when he gets on a (hot streak), he can usually sustain for a bit. As far as the quality of contact and consistently squaring up the ball, it feels like (what he was doing in May) . It’s been over a week now that he’s been taking really, really quality at-bats.
“He’s hitting seventh. We’ve been swinging the bat great as a team for quite a while now, but when Jarren’s going and you have someone down in the lower third who’s not only getting on base but also has the slug, yeah, it makes us more dynamic.”
