Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Drew Allar had quite the welcome-to-the- NFL moment in Thursday’s 28-9 win over the Green Bay Packers in his team’s preseason opener.
The Penn State alum completed 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions while recording a passer rating of 154.8. He also had a 2-yard rushing touchdown as well.
Granted, Allar’s performance was against Green Bay’s second- and third-stringers, but he still turned quite a few heads, nonetheless. In fact, his numbers were so impressive that the Steelers’ team store actually sold out of Allar’s No. 16 jerseys after the game.
“Yes, We did sell out of Drew Allar jerseys last night… And yes, they are back in stock now!” the Steelers pro shop posted on X.
Though it was just one game against the backups, it was certainly a confidence-building performance for Allar, who many believe will be Aaron Rodgers’ heir apparent when he retires after this season.
“It's a huge confidence boost, but I think I came into the game confident just because of the preparation and everything that has gone on in the last two weeks down in Latrobe,” Allar said , via ESPN.
“Coach McCarthy and the whole offensive staff put together a really concise game plan … just calling stuff that they know I'm comfortable with and just allowing us to go out and play fast. I feel like they did a great job of putting me in a position to go out and be successful.”
On Friday, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy raved about Allar’s performance during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” letting everyone know Pittsburgh got a steal in the 2026 third-rounder.
“First and foremost, if we go back to the draft process when we drafted Drew we felt like we were getting a first round pick,” McCarthy told McAfee .
“The value that our personnel department had on him coming out of his junior year and just sit there and listen to all the reports as you talked about the timeline of his career and what happened his senior year, he had the injury. All that’s held true.”
