Nevada High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams

In the biggest matchup in the country, not just out West, Bishop Gorman took down St. John Bosco in a battle featuring two of the nation’s true power programs.

Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state title. Below are the top 25 Nevada high school football teams,  according to the Massey Ratings , as of Aug. 23.

1. Bishop Gorman (2-0)

The Gaels showed why they could be the No. 1 team in the country with an exciting 38-28 win over national power Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco. After leading 21-0 at the half, the Braves rallied to tie things up at 28 apiece midway through the 4th quarter. Gorman had an answer with QB Ace Amina hitting former Bosco RB Corey Hinton for a 55-yard touchdown that proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore edge Braylon Ivory had his coming-out party on the big stage with four sacks and was our choice as Player of the Game. He picked up five scholarship offers on Saturday, including Arizona, Kansas State and UCLA.

2. Liberty (0-1)

The Patriots are in the middle of a two-week bye but will take on a very good Lehi (Utah ) Skyridge team on Friday (Sept. 4).

3. Arbor View (0-2)

The Aggies lost another tough out-of-state matchup against a strong Carlsbad (Calif.) 24-17. Oregon State quarterback commit Thaddeus Thatcher threw for 182 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a score, and Damani Warren added six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in the loss. The Aggies had one last chance on their final drive but fumbled a hook-and-ladder attempt, and Carlsbad recovered and ran out the clock. It doesn’t get easier for Arbor View as they take on Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton, ranked No. 3 in the state, on Friday.

4. Spanish Springs (1-0)

The Cougars won their season opener over Carson in impressive fashion, 35-7. Spanish Springs graduated over 30 seniors from their State Championship team from a year ago but looks poised for another run. Junior quarterback Kanon Boggs was perfect on the night, literally, completing 8-8 passes for 154 yards and four touchdowns. Wideout George Deacon Buddy was the primary target with four catches for 120 yards and four touchdowns. Next up for the Cougs will be No. 23-ranked Foothill on Friday (Aug. 28).

5. Churchill County (2-0)

The Greenwave knocked off Reed, who entered the game ranked No. 10 in the state, 14-13 in a thriller. Sophomore running back Alijah Juarez carried it 13 times for 102 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Camden Richardson was 13-24 for 129 yards and a touchdown. Next up for Churchill County will be a road game Friday against South Tahoe.

6. Sloan Canyon (1-0)

In one of the most exciting games of the weekend, the Pirates beat an always tough McQueen squad 28-21. It was sweet revenge for Sloan Canyon, who lost to the Lancers in the 4A State Championship game a year ago. Running back Jermaine Wilson rushed for 228 yards and two touchdowns and Kalepo Mose scored from a yard out for what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown. Next up for the Pirates will be a home game against Pasadena (Calif.) Muir on Friday (Aug. 28).

7. Palo Verde (2-0)

Palo Verde moved to 2-0 with a big 28-26 win over Legacy. The Panthers had a big goal-line stand in the final two minutes of the game to seal the win. Junior wideout X’Zavier McZeal was the offensive star of the game, with six catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns including the go-ahead score with just under five minutes to go. From there, the Panthers’ defense made the plays to seal the win. Palo Verde will play Desert Oasis on Friday.

8. Faith Lutheran (1-1)

The Crusaders stuffed a two-point conversion late in the game to hold on and beat a talented Bakersfield Christian squad 28-27. Quarterback Dominick Folino completed 13-of-19 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns. He hit wide receiver Ryan Rowan from 45 yards out late in the 4th quarter for what proved to be the game-winning score. Bakersfield Christian had a chance late after scoring a touchdown and elected to go for the win over the tie, but the Crusaders’ defense came up big. The Crusaders will travel to Colorado and take on state No. 2-ranked Valor Christian on Friday.

9. Shadow Ridge Mustangs (1-0)

The Mustangs opened their season in blowout fashion, knocking off Durango 41-7. Five different players scored touchdowns for Shadow Ridge,, led by junior back Isaiah Jones, who rushed for two, and sophomore running back Princeton Leyva, who had a game-high 107 yards and a touchdown. The Mustangs will hit the road and take on Simi Valley (Calif.) Friday.

10. Centennial (1-1)

In one of the highest-scoring games of the weekend out West, the Bulldogs lost a tough one to Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral 52-49. Centennial was unable to slow down the Phantoms’ offense, which had nearly 540 yards on the night. Centennial quarterback Blake Nadler had a strong game and continues to look like one of the top uncommitted signal callers out West. The former Nevada commit has one of the quicker releases in the region and looks primed to put up huge numbers this fall.
