Aaron Rodgers 'Bummed' About NFL's Decision for Packers-Steelers Game

After more than two decades in the league, Rodgers will walk away as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, regardless of what happens this year.

But surprisingly, he won't get an official send-off against either of his former teams, the New York Jets or the Green Bay Packers . That's especially disappointing when it comes to the Packers — the franchise that drafted him, the team he won a Super Bowl with in 2011, and the place where he spent 18 years as the face of the franchise.

The NFL scheduled Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers to face the Packers in their preseason opener on Thursday, but the game will be played in Pittsburgh, not Green Bay. Rodgers addressed the decision during a Zoom call with reporters on Wednesday.

"100%, 100%," Rodgers said when asked whether he had hoped the game would be in Green Bay. "When I heard it was possible to play both my former teams, I was really hoping this one was going to be in Green Bay, not just to get back at Lambeau one more time, but to head out to Chives [restaurant] for a dinner and maybe head out to Green Bay Country Club for a quick nine or something. I was really hoping it was going to be in Green Bay for a lot of reasons.

"It would have been strange, being in that [visitors] locker room and stuff, but I would have found my way over, like many former players have over the years ... and see some of the guys and see some of the trainers and equipment staff and all the people I really care about that still work there. Yeah, I was definitely bummed out that we weren't in Lambeau for this one."

Rodgers may still have just one Super Bowl to his name, but he remains one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history. He's been named to 10 Pro Bowls, earned four first-team All-Pro honors, and won four league MVPs. He's led the league in passer rating four times, topped the league in touchdown passes twice, and posted the league's highest completion percentage in 2020 (70.7%). He still holds the all-time record for the highest single-season passer rating, with a mark of 122.5 in 2011, and the lowest single-season interception rate in NFL history at 0.3% in 2018. All of that was done in Green Bay.

He currently ranks fifth all-time in career passing yards (66,274), fourth in passing touchdowns (527), and is tied with Lamar Jackson for the highest career passer rating in NFL history (102.2). He's a lock for the Hall of Fame whenever he does hang it up — and with that likely coming after this season, seeing him take one final snap at Lambeau would have meant a lot to Rodgers, fans, and the league alike.
