The Dallas Cowboys addressed a major need when they signed veteran free agent Von Miller to join their stable of pass rushers. The Cowboys have been searching for solutions off the edge this summer, and despite their optimism young internal candidates will develop, Miller provides insurance in case they don’t.
The linebacker corps faces a similar situation within their ranks. After their complete collapse in 2025, Dallas set out to fix the linebacker position group. They drafted and traded their way through the offseason and now hold optimism for improvement in 2026. But like the situation at edge rusher, some veteran insurance would still be welcomed.
It might sound ungrateful to meet one addition with the request for another, but when the logic fits one, it inevitably fits the other. So, in the immortal words of Animal House, “Thank you, sir, may I have another?”
They should do the same thing with Bobby Wagner at ILB. https://t.co/n5MrPwlcUL
— Charean Williams (@NFLCharean) August 17, 2026 To call for the signing of Bobby Wagner is as uncreative as it is old news, but it makes sense. Drafted in 2012, Wagner is a legend in this game. With six All-Pros and 10 Pro Bowls, the latest Pro Bowl coming in 2024, Wagner is an excellent insurance policy for a Cowboys linebacker group riddled with maybes.
There are high hopes for players like DeMarvion Overshown, Jaishawn Barham and Dee Winter in 2026. Then again, there were high hopes for DeMarvion Overshown, Kenneth Murray, Jack Sandborn, and Logan Wilson in 2025 and the collection of those names proved disastrous. Adding a proven entity like Wagner would raise the floor in many of the same ways Miller raises the floor at outside linebacker.
At age 36, Wagner is likely just a two-down player in the NFL. That’s no shade on Wagner given that when he entered the league, Dallas featured players such as Morris Claiborne and Miles Austin. In other words, it was a long time ago. Wagner’s days as a good coverage player are behind him, but he’s still an asset against the run.
With any luck, someone like Wagner would only situationally play while young ascending talents increase snap share as the season goes on. If the money is right and the expectations are set, Wagner would be a solid addition to a promising, yet unproven, unit that could use insurance and depth.
