Jersey's Nowacki makes second final at Glasgow 2026

Jersey's silver-medal-winning swimmer Filip Nowacki has reached his second final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The 18-year-old, who came second in the 100m breaststroke on Saturday to win Jersey's first medal in 36 years, qualified sixth fastest for the 50m breaststroke final.

He was third in his semi-final in a time of 27.22 seconds behind Australia's 100m breaststroke gold medallist Sam Williamson and South Africa's Chris Smith.

The 50m breaststroke is Nowacki's weakest event, although he is the world junior champion at both 100m and 200m breaststroke and the fastest-ranked Commonwealth swimmer over 200m.

Earlier in the day Nowacki had progressed to the semi-finals after being edged out by former Olympic champion Adam Ramsay-Peaty by 0.02 seconds in his heat.

"The 50 is always tight, especially given my size," Nowacki told BBC Jersey.

"I've said before, I've always struggled to make it back in the afternoons because in the morning I'm so relaxed and the race just flows.

"Then I get back in the evening and I tense up too much and I want it too much, so I'm very pleased to make it back for the final."

Elsewhere Isaac Thompson finished eighth in the final of the men's 200m backstroke.

The 18-year-old - swimming in his first major final - finished in a time of 2:03.73 - just over three seconds adrift of seventh-placed Jack Skerry of England.

"It was brilliant," Thompson told BBC Jersey.

"The atmosphere from the crowd was amazing - I've never swum in a pool like that with that type of crowd.

"It was a once in a lifetime experience and I really enjoyed it.

"Being able to race such incredible guys, it's just amazing to be able to put yourself amongst those people and say that you were in a Commonwealth final."

Jersey's 4x200m relay team broke the island record to qualify for the final [BBC]

Jersey's men's 4x200m freestyle relay team of Oscar Dodds, his brother Isaac, Sam Sterry and Matthew Deffains broke the island record twice as they made the final.

They set a new best of 7:36.90 as they finished seventh in the final ahead of the Cayman Islands.

The quartet had broken the island record in the morning heats when they qualified for the final in eighth place in a time of 7:40.99.

Earlier in the day Sterry finished in 10th place and Oscar Dodds 12th in the 200m backstroke heats, with neither qualifying for the final alongside Thompson.

Megan Hansford was 42nd in the women's 100m freestyle, while Clara Ginnis was third in her 1500m freestyle heat in 17:36.94, beating team-mate Hannah Sterry by just under five seconds.

Meanwhile, Taylor Greechan's hopes of progressing in the men's singles bowls are over after he lost a third match out of four.

The islander lost on a tie-break to Namibia's Waylon Wentzel on Sunday morning.

Greechan had won the first set 8-3, but was comprehensively beaten 9-2 in the second set before losing a deciding tie-breaker 1-0.

He is sixth in his group as he prepares to face Guernsey's former World Indoor champion Jason Greenslade and Australia's unbeaten group leader Aaron Wilson on Monday.

However, women's pair Fiona Archibald and Sara Douglas got a second victory at the Commonwealth Games as they convincingly beat the Cook Islands.

The Jersey duo were never behind in the game as they took the first set 7-2 before an impressive 12-1 victory in the second set - six shots in the third end helped seal the win.

They are fourth in their pool and unable to make the knockout stages ahead of their final game against winless Falkland Islands on Monday.
